METAL SALES RESIDENTIAL SOLUTIONS

As a homeowner, you want to get the most out of your investment. Would you buy a house if it had exterior walls that needed to be replaced every 15 years? Never. Yet millions of homeowners annually purchase asphalt shingle roofs that will only last 20 years at best.

Fortunately, this is changing. Homeowners have more options available to them than ever before, and have discovered a far more permanent roofing solution – metal. Explore the clear advantages of metal roofing today – learn why metal has become the fastest-growing category of roofing, and why a Metal Sales roof offers the best value to today’s well-informed homeowner.

Today, most U.S. homes have asphalt shingle roofs – made from an inferior roofing material that provides them with only temporary protection. In as few as 15 years, asphalt shingle roofs fail and must be replaced.

Because of high oil prices, there is little cost difference between asphalt shingles and metal roofing systems. Asphalt derives from petroleum, so as oil prices rise, the material cost different between metal and asphalt shingles narrows. Additionally, metal roofs have many more innovative features that save homeowners money long after the initial purchase. When you factor in the long lifecycle of metal compared to asphalt shingles, homeowners are beginning to understand the true value that metal roofing brings to a home. This is a major reason why metal is the fastest growing category of roofing in the U.S.

Here are just some of the advantages that metal roofs have over asphalt shingle roofs:

ENERGY SAVINGS

A metal roof can save up to 40% off energy costs. It’s all in the color coating. Standard Metal Sales color coating systems are ENERGY STAR® listed and many are certified by the Cool Roof Rating Council. In both cases, Metal Sales products help to reduce the solar heat load on homes, thereby reducing energy expenditures for cooling.

REDUCED INSURANCE PREMIUMS

Unlike asphalt or wood shingles, a metal roof exposed to burning embers will not catch fire. Also, metal roofs fare better than shingles in high winds. These advantages can save up to 35% on insurance premiums2.

VIRTUALLY MAINTENANCE FREE

Metal roofs are easily maintained by simply washing with plain water or household detergents for areas with heavy dirt deposits. Occasional light cleaning will maintain a good appearance.

LONGEVITY

A metal roof will likely be the last roof you ever purchase. A quality metal roof will last for generations – at least three times longer than an asphalt shingle roof.

RESALE VALUE

On average, a quality metal roof increases the value of a home by $1.45 per square foot1, whereas because of their shorter lifespan, an asphalt shingle roof is often a liability when it’s time to sell. Metal roofs redeem up to 95% of their cost at resale.

AESTHETICS

Metal roofs offer a wide variety of profiles and unlimited colors to dramatically improve the curb appeal of any style home.

ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE

Steel is the #1 recycled material in the world, and residential metal roofs are made from a minimum of 30% recycled steel. Asphalt shingles contain petroleum, are rarely ever recycled and are the largest contributor to landfill waste of any building material.

There are several common misconceptions that persist today about metal roofs. Here we dispel those myths and offer the facts about metal roofing.

Myth: “When it rains, metal roofs are noisy.”

Fact: This likely stems from a common experience with the sound that rain makes on old barns and worn buildings. The difference between a barn and residential roof is a solid roof deck. This deck combined with underlayment dampens noise, resulting in a residential metal roof that is no more or less noisy than any other type of roof.

Myth: “You can’t walk on a metal roof.”

Fact: Metal roofing is very durable. You can safely walk on a metal roof without causing damage to the panel. Having a solid roof deck provides extra stability to hold a person’s weight.

Myth: “Metal roofs rust.”

Fact: Metal roofs have come a long way. Metal Sales roofing features a protective Galvalume® or galvanized coating over the base metal and employ high-quality color systems that carry industry-leading warranties. The advanced alloys in these protective coatings ensure that your metal roof will remain impervious to corrosion for decades to come.

Myth: “Metal roofs get struck by lightning.”

Fact: Lightning strikes the highest point in an area, regardless of the material of the impact point. Metal roofs have the same chance of being struck as asphalt shingle, slate, wood or any other type of roof material.

Myth: “Metal roofs are hot.”

Fact: All roofs get hot. However, metal roofs come in a variety of ‘cool’ colors that reflect solar heat. Metal also releases solar heat quicker than asphalt shingles, actually reducing the heat load on a home. According to the Heat Island Group of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, reflective metal roofs reduce the need for cooling buildings during hot summer months by up to 40%, saving energy and money.

Myth: “Metal roofs are heavy.”

Fact: Surprisingly, metal roofing is generally 50% lighter than an asphalt roof and 75% lighter than concrete tile, fiber cement shakes and slate.

METAL ROOFS COST LESS THAN ASPHALT ROOFING

Your roof costs you more than just the retail cost of materials and installation. When determining which style of roof, metal vs asphalt shingle, it is important to consider additional costs brought about by other influential factors like:  Life-Cycle Costs, Energy Savings, Insurance Costs and Effects on Home Resale Value.

LIFE CYCLE COSTS

Planning a roofing project for the coming season? How would you feel about having to do it all over again 10 to 15 years from now?

With metal roofing, you need not worry. Longevity is one of the top reasons consumers report choosing metal roofing for their homes. A metal roof can last as long as fifty years or more, requiring very little maintenance and looking beautiful all the while.

Since asphalt roofing needs to be replaced 2 – 4 times as often as metal roofing, you really need to multiply not only the initial cost of asphalt roofing materials but also the cost of asphalt roof repairs and re-installation man hours to compare to the typical “once-in-a-lifetime” metal roofing installation.

ENERGY SAVINGS WITH COOL METAL ROOFING

As a homeowner, you should expect that your home be built or renovated with energy-saving materials. Materials that not only secure and improve your home, but also provide long-term savings on energy bills. Metal roofing does just that, saving up to 40% of your annual household energy costs, depending on your geographical region.

The Benefits of Energy Efficient Metal Roofing

Reflective metal roofing can save your home up to 40% in summer cooling energy costs (as reported by the Cool Metal Roofing Coalition and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory). Highly emissive metal roofs can reduce urban air temperatures by as much as 12°F.

The secret to metal roofing’s energy savings is in its variety of finishes. As shown above, the basic, unpainted metal roof will reflect much of the solar radiation usually absorbed in your attic and home by an asphalt roof.

For homes in warmer climates, pre-painted or granular coated metal roofing systems not only reflect solar energy but also cool your home by re-emitting most of what solar radiation is absorbed. A highly-reflective and highly emissive painted or granular-coated metal roof is optimal for reducing energy consumption and can actually re-emit up to 90% of absorbed solar radiation.

Most metal roofing is composed of recycled material and can be installed directly onto an existing asphalt roof, reducing landfill waste and promoting quick installation as well as decades of environmentally-sound, maintenance-free strength and beauty.

Did you know white-painted metal roofing has the highest solar reflectance value of any roofing product available and can save you up to 40% of your annual energy bills?

LOWER YOUR INSURANCE WITH WEATHER-RESISTANT METAL ROOFING

If you live in an area that experiences extreme weather from time to time, be it hail, heavy wind or forest and canyon fire, you should be aware of the availability of impact-resistant UL Standard 2218 tested metal roofing (classes 1 through 4) and fire-resistant Class A, B and C metal roofing. While important for the safety and security reasons alone, these quality metal roofing products may also earn you discounts on your homeowner’s insurance!

EFFECTS ON HOME RESALE VALUE

Recoup Up To 95% Of Metal Roof Cost At ResaleContact A Metal Sales Expert Near You

Have you thought about what will happen when it’s time to sell your home? This is another point in time when the decisions you make now will impact the cost and recuperation of your investment. Homes with metal roofs saw up to an astonishing 95% of the cost recouped at resale. This is not true of asphalt shingle roofs, which must be replaced and repaired more frequently.

Metal Sales will help you select the perfect metal roof for your home. We’ll walk you through the various material options, profile styles and color choices to make your decision easy and informed.

We are here to support you, and we are always open to your questions.
When weighing your options, here are a few key things to consider:

FASTENER TYPES: EXPOSED AND CONCEALED.

Exposed Fastened

This economical option features fasteners that penetrate a roof panel to attach it to a roof. This leaves the fasteners exposed.

To do so, your installer should take care to tear off the existing roof covering and add a high-temperature peel-and-stick underlayment to the entire roof, which reduces the risk of leaking.

Concealed Fastened

Concealed, or hidden, fastened panels are installed with fasteners that do not penetrate the exposed portion of the metal. The attachment mechanism is hidden from the elements and view, and so provides a sleek aesthetic and the ultimate in weather and water protection.

GAUGE

This term refers to the thickness of the steel panel.

COATINGS

A multi-layer color system which helps to preserve and increase the performance of your metal roofing system.
